What changes the price

  • Size. A small unit (1.5–4.5 m²) typically costs R640 a month and a large one (9–15 m²) R960. Book the size your things need, not the size of your home.
  • Location. Facilities near city centres and in busy suburbs charge more. A unit 15 minutes further out can cost noticeably less.
  • Access. 14% of facilities that state their hours offer 24/7 access. Round-the-clock access and drive-up units usually cost a little more.
  • Climate control. 30 facilities list climate-controlled units, worth it for wood furniture, documents, art and electronics, at a higher price.
  • Booking length. Some facilities discount longer bookings or run first-month specials. Ask, and read what the price becomes after the special.
  • Extras. A deposit, an admin fee, a padlock and insurance can add to the first month. Count them when you compare.

How to pay less

  1. Work out the smallest size you need with the size guide. Stack high: most units are about 2.4 m tall.
  2. Compare at least three facilities. On most city pages you can send one request to up to three of them.
  3. Ask for the monthly price after any special, and whether a longer booking is cheaper.
  4. Use your household insurance if it covers goods in storage, instead of the facility's cover.

How we collect prices

Each price is the lowest monthly price a facility publishes on its own website for a storage unit, collected in October 2026. We leave out once-off fees, container sales and first-month teaser prices below R200. Prices change, so always confirm with the facility. Run a facility and see a wrong price? Tell us.

Storage price questions

What is the cheapest way to store furniture in South Africa?

Book the smallest unit your things fit (the size guide helps), choose a facility outside the city centre, and ask about discounts for 3-, 6- or 12-month bookings. Of the cities we track, Bloemfontein has the lowest typical price, about R520 a month.

Are storage prices quoted with VAT?

Most facilities quote monthly prices including VAT, but some business-focused ones quote excluding VAT. Where a facility says so, we show it in the price note on its listing.

Do I pay a deposit?

Many facilities ask for a refundable deposit, often one month's rent, and some charge a once-off admin fee or sell a padlock. Others ask for no deposit at all. Check the terms on the listing or ask when you enquire.

Is insurance included in the price?

Usually not. Facilities either offer cover at an extra monthly cost, or ask you to cover your goods on your household policy. Of the 91 facilities whose websites mention insurance, 63% ask you to arrange your own.

Can I rent month to month?

Mostly yes. 100% of the facilities whose websites state their terms rent month to month, usually with a minimum of one month and a notice period of two weeks to a month.
